The average person has up to 60,000 thoughts in a day as per
the Cleveland Clinic. You cannot stop yourself from thinking. So if you have to
practice mindfulness, then you will have to just be aware of a couple of bad
thoughts that you go through in a day.
What is mindfulness and why are we constantly being preached
to practice it? Mindfulness, according to Jon Kobat Zinn, in his book, ‘Wherever You Go, there You are’,
mindfulness is the awareness that emerges when we pay attention on purpose.
This means that we are in the present moment and are nonjudgmental to the
experience that is unfolding in front of us.
Mindfulness has been advocated by several therapists and
scholars considering the numerous health benefits that it bestows us with.
Mindfulness, according to a lot of researches, has helped in prevention or
slowdown of several diseases, some of them probably lethal as well since it
works to tone down the stress levels in our body. But it is not just that,
mindfulness also helps us in different aspects of our lives such as career,
education, and social relations, etc.
The beauty of mindfulness is that you are just observing the
events that are unfolding in front of you rather than what is to come in the
future. Of course, like any other exercise mindfulness will take lots of
repetition to master, and there are several ways that you can succeed at it.
Here are some of the ways that you can use this method to turn your life around
in a healthier and happier direction.
You phone background
Your phone’s background can have a more significant effect
on your mindset than you can imagine. On average, a person spends four years of
their life looking down at their phone. So the best thing here that you can do
it to change your phone background to a mantra that you chant while practicing
mindfulness or a word like breathe. Reading this will instinctively remind you
to commit to that action.
Set a reminder
Why always use the electronics to read heartbreaking news or
a post that could make you question your entire existence? You can also use its
features to remind you to meditate. This will also put your brain into a habit
to practice mindfulness at a certain time. There are even mindfulness apps that
not only remind you to be mindful but also give professionally approved methods
to use.
When you do something, focus on it
When you are eating, focus on your meal, when you are
drinking, just drink. Try to stop yourself from reaching out and grabbing that
TV remote or your mobile phone. Savor the taste of the food or drink.
