It is a pity to see that nobody is ready to talk and highlight the pressing concerns of remote work burnout. And those who try to bring this topic under the spotlight are often stereotyped, mocked or not taken seriously.

The recent prevailing trend of working remotely kickstarted somewhere in between the 1980s and 2000. Also known as Work from home and or teleworking, this venture refers to the idea of flexible working arrangements where employees and employers work outside of corporate offices. remote work settings can be permanent or temporary, occasional or frequent and part-time or full-time.

Increase in Remote Working 

               Apparent is the actuality that the recent turn of events has phenomenally spiked an evident increase in remote working. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus has forced workers to stay indoors and render their job and businesses by staying indoors. This has increased in work from home opportunities. Despite the coronavirus restrictions being lifted; the hybrid work environment is still going strong and continuing to increase at a fast pace.  The remote working environment is gradually becoming the new normal. 90% of senior executives now expect to work from home. In May 2021, a Mercer study found that 70% of companies said they were planning to adopt the hybrid model.

               Evident is the certainty that remote working has phenomenal gains. Startups and companies can save their resources and money. They do not have to provide electricity, internet connections, laptops or computers and other office essentials which are required in a corporate office. They can save additional transportation and management costs by going remote and offering their employees to work from home.

              Talking about the employees, they also prefer and enjoy flexible working conditions. They have the leverage of not hustling to go to offices at onset times as they can easily operate from the comfort of their homes or remote areas. In addition to that, they can enjoy multiple ventures and activities. Many do multiple jobs in this way and execute domestic chores simultaneously thereby saving time and effort. 77% of remote workers say that they are more productive when working from home. The average annual income of remote workers is $4,000 higher than that of other workers. 85% of managers believe that having teams with remote workers will become the new trend.

Work From Home burnout

However, although having numerous benefits, the idea of working remotely encompasses its own downsides. Recent studies have given shocking facts about remote workers facing continued burnouts. A recent study by the employment website Indeed found that 52% of workers feel burned out, with 67% blaming COVID-19 for their stress. A 2020 Gallup poll found that fully remote workers now experience more burnout than on-site workers. In addition to that, according to Monster, over two-thirds, or 69%, of employees are experiencing burnout symptoms while working from home.

Psychologist and associate professor of psychology at the University of New Haven in Connecticut, Melissa L. Whitson says,

While those working remotely still have a job, there is the threat that they, too, could lose their paycheck or have their salary cut at some point if the recession continues. There is still that ‘I need to work while I’m making money now and also to show that I am a good employee so they keep me on. There is that added pressure onto it.”

There are numerous reasons which can stir up mental and physical tiredness, fatigue and weariness in remote workers thereby causing burnouts. The prime reason for remote working burnout involves working alone and not being able to physically talk or connect with fellow employees or team leaders. Although connected virtually through online demeanors, but talking face to face encompasses its own clarity and certainty. One can discuss different aspects of working and solve problems through effective communication and teamwork. In remote working, the worker is mostly on their own and have to pave their way out from complications on their own or with little or no help at all.

In addition to that, sitting in one place for instance their home diminishes creativity and productivity. Remote workers often run out of ideas. This is because stepping out of the home incurs a series of notions and ideas as you gaze at different people, objects and activities.  Sitting at the same place every day shuts down the ability of the brain to seed and process new thoughts and conceptualizations.

Moreover, there is an evident lack of discipline, time management, professional skill development, teamwork, accountability and whatnot. Some individuals fail to afford and arrange proper working conditions. For instance, not everyone is able to access a strong internet connection and a fast-working laptop or computer. Some individuals lack the proper space and time to execute top-tier work. Additionally, consistent stress of meeting the deadlines and pressure from superiors further wrecks the management of working remotely.

Keeping that in view, all these reasons add up to become what we call ‘burnout’. Consistent burnouts can seriously impact the mental, physical and emotional wellness of a person. This can initiate problems like physical disabilities, heart diseases, high blood pressure, hypertension, anxiety, stress, depression and whatnot. In severe cases, a person may go on the verge of getting a stroke or cardiac arrest due to continues stress or tension.

How to Stop remote work burnout?

The far-reaching effects of remote work burnouts can seriously wreck the emotional and physical freshness and wellness of individuals. Although at that time, they may feel better after temporary treatments this condition can pose drastic predicaments in the longer run.  Hence, it is paramount to initiate constructive steps to stave off the horrors of remote work burnout.

One should primarily make a productive schedule. They should draw a thin line between their private and professional lives. Mixing work with domestic and family life can seriously muddle your life and backlash you with burnout. During family time, they should not think about work and vice versa. While working, one should only focus and work. They should free their mind from every tension to incorporate their full attention and potential to pull out excellence, productivity and creativity in their work.

It is gainful to take small breaks between work, maintain a good sitting posture while working, take a good and healthy diet, drink plenty of water, get adequate sleep, go for usual walks, meditate, socialize, meet friends, explore new places, enjoy your free time and stay happy. In short, to brush aside the instances of burnout it is crucial to not get stuck at home or stay in the same place. After completing your work, you should relax and enjoy your time with family, friends and those close to you. Additionally, you should execute activities and tasks which bring you sheer happiness and joy and calm your racing mind. One should think about what helps them kick pressures and tensions. They should think about different avenues which could help them de-stress and unwind their incapacitated soul and subconscious. Following that, they should do stuff that lightens up their mood and makes them forget about the many tensions posed by their work.

Another effective measure to stop burnout is to convince and program your mind in a manner to stay positive. The mind is a complex yet thrilling organ. It can be convinced and molded in a way the person desires. You can persuade your mind to see the bright side and stay positive. This is a good stress management scheme as it helps to maintain calmness, serenity and peace of mind.

Furthermore, seeking therapy and talking about stress or any mental illness should be normalized. It is essential to seek medical help if one is severely affected by remote working burnouts and stress. Talking with someone you trust or are comfortable with seriously helps in calming the stressed and tensed individual.

It would not be wrong to say that the human race is currently progressing through tough times. many individuals are on the verge of giving up not only on their work but also on themselves. Researchers looked into how workplace stress impacts mortality and health costs in the United States and found that it led to nearly 120,000 deaths and nearly $190 billion in spending each year.

It is a pity to see that nobody is ready to talk and highlight the pressing concerns of remote work burnout. And those who try to bring this topic under the spotlight are often stereotyped, mocked or not taken seriously. In some cases, it is also considered taboo to talk about mental health conditions. They are not paid much heed and are inconsiderably set aside for being worthless. However, it is of utmost importance to bring these topics to the frontline so that steps can be initiated to help those who are suffering and an end can be bought to burnout. If this issue will not be addressed on an urgent basis, it will not only affect the worker’s health and wellbeing but also have a grave impact on work and business. There will be minimum or no productivity and creativity at all. This can seed the predicament of falling behind time and going back to square one where there was ignorance in anachronistic times.
